Writing is one thing. Getting paid for it is another. Here are common invoicing practices used by freelance writers.
Per-Word vs. Flat Rate
Many freelance writers bill per word (for example, $0.015/word) and include the exact word count as a line item on the invoice. For repeat clients, flat per-article rates are often simpler-just make sure the agreed scope is clearly noted on the invoice.
Spell Out the Rights
Usage rights should be clearly specified on the invoice. First Serial Rights typically allow one-time publication, while Work for Hire transfers full ownership. If rights aren't stated, clients often assume full ownership by default.
